Origins of the Met Gala The Met Gala started back in 1948 when Lambert established the "Costume Institute Gala" as a fundraiser for the newly founded Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The event served as a modest gathering attended by New York's high society and tickets were priced at only $50.

The Met Gala is held annually at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where all of the biggest names in fashion show off their best and boldest looks. The theme this year is "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion," stemming from the latest exhibition by the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
