Tropical Storm Chantal forms off the coast of South Carolina

What we know: Chantal could continue to strengthen before landfall. It's forecast to make landfall in South Carolina late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Rainfall accumulations of 2-4in with locally higher amounts of up to 6in are possible along the coastal sections of the Carolinas through Monday.

Its maximum sustained winds were clocked at 50 mph, and it was moving north at 8 mph. Rain bands from Chantal were moving over the coast, the hurricane center said, and the storm's center was expected to move over South Carolina overnight or early Sunday with flash floods an increasing concern.

There are no Tropical Storm Watches/Warnings in effect for Florida, and direct impacts are not expected.
