Faith Kipyegon in Paris marathon

Kipyegon, the Olympic 1,500-meter gold medalist from Kenya, ran in 4 minutes, 06.42 seconds -- the fastest mile in history by a woman -- at Stade Charléty in Paris.

4:00.00 came and went. Instead, Kipyegon crossed the finish line and the graphics read 4:06.91 as her final time. Kipyegon would not, on this day, become the first woman ever to run a sub-4 mile, but she did run faster than her own world record of 4:07.64, which she set in 2023.

Ethiopian Diribe Welteji was runner-up in 3:51.44. Last month Kipyegon failed in a bid to become the first woman to run a mile in under four minutes. She ran 4:06.42 — the fastest mile in history by a woman — at Stade Charléty in Paris.
