Karen Read found not guilty of murder in Boston trial

The jury of seven women and five men decided Wednesday that Read was not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the 2022 death of her boyfriend, John O'Keefe, a Boston police officer. Read was found guilty of a lesser charge of operating under the influence of alcohol.

Karen Read, the Massachusetts woman accused of drunkenly striking her off-duty police officer boyfriend and leaving him to die in January 2022, was acquitted of the most serious charge of second-degree murder. She was found guilty on a lesser charge of drunk driving.

Karen Read was cleared of murder and manslaughter charges Wednesday, as a huge crowd of her supporters roared with applause outside of the courthouse in Dedham, Massachusetts. The jury found her guilty only of operating under the influence of alcohol (OUI).
