In just the past few years, the state department has begun to see adult females with cubs — another indicator of a growing population, according to Krusling. Black bears are most commonly seen in Ohio in eastern forested areas of the state in late May through early July, according to the ODNR.

However, in recent years, evidence of adult females with cubs have been documented in several counties in northeast Ohio, near the Pennsylvania border. Adult female bears show strong home range fidelity, meaning once they establish a range, they tend to stay there.
