Iran has supported Russia both diplomatically and militarily since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. It has voted against United Nations resolutions condemning Russia and has regularly delivered loitering munitions, chiefly the Shahed 131 and Shahed 136, to the Russian military.

The office is currently held by Abbas Araghchi since 2024.

Despite a recent strategic partnership, Russia is offering Iran little more than rhetorical support after U.S. and Israeli strikes. Putin is prioritizing Russia's interests, such as avoiding escalation and maintaining ties with Israel and Trump, over fully backing Iran.
