At the book's end, Toranaga justifies burning the Erasmus to ally with the
Catholic lords, who in turn agree not to kill Blackthorne. His karma,
Toranaga says, is to never leave Japan, as Mariko's was to die for her lord
and as Toranaga's was to be the restored and absolutely powerful shogun.
