The first group of immigrants has arrived at a new detention center deep in the Florida Everglades that officials have dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” a spokesperson for Republican state Attorney General James Uthmeier told The Associated Press.

Nestled in the middle of Florida's humid, subtropical wetland ecosystem, “Alligator Alcatraz” was transformed from a training and transition airport to a temporary tent city for migrants.

The hastily constructed detention camp in the Everglades that began processing immigrant detainees late this week has already flooded once, may not meet hurricane codes and is not officially approved or funded by the federal government.
