As an author and AI scientist, I have mixed feelings and suspect we haven't heard the end of this debate, as the right answer is not obvious: Federal judge rules copyrighted books are fair use for AI training www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/federal-judge-rules-copyrighted-books-are-fair-use-ai-training-rcna214766

If the Anthropic fair use verdict (i) survives appeal and (ii) becomes precedent for other lawsuits, and AI training is broadly deemed to be fair use as tech lobbyists hope, paywalls will go up everywhere. Fair use verdicts in AI training cases are bad for the public internet.

Pay attention to who is celebrating today's fair use judgement. Despite authors' big piracy win, verdict's narrow scope, & likely appeal on fair use, these people celebrate a verdict that favors AI companies over creators defending their rights. Tells you all you need to know.

Major AI copyright news: Judge Alsup ruled that Anthropic's training on copyrighted books is fair use, a big win for the AI company.BUT—and this is a big but—Anthropic has to face authors in court for pirating their books. Damages could be in the billions. www.wired.com/story/anthropic-ai-copyright-fair-use-piracy-ruling/
