On Monday, a United States District Court ruled that training LLMs on copyrighted books constitutes fair use. A number of authors had filed suit against Anthropic for training its models on their books without permission. Just as we allow people to read books and learn from them

It is really disappointing that this @stratechery article, published after *both* AI copyright rulings this week, only discussed the ruling that favored AI companies. It ignores the fact that, the very next day, a judge in Kadrey vs. Meta said that in many cases gen AI training pic.x.com/xsALO1l7P8

If someone tells you that training gen AI on copyrighted work without a license is legal in the US, send them Judge Chhabria’s ruling from yesterday: “In many circumstances it will be illegal to copy copyright-protected works to train generative AI models without permission.”
